My full proof predictor of the J Grannom hatch is the budding of the Red Bud trees along the river. When they show the first color we are 3 days from an emergence. This has proven to be true every spring for the past 10 years. Including the earliest hatch of all in 2012, March 23rd. Last year, also a long cold winter, the emergence came on 4/16…a late average date. My early prediction is April 13th. But we won’t know for sure until the Red Buds tell us!

Big Sycamore at the junk yard moved a little toward the bank and downstream, but not much. I fished today and watched for risers while Jim and Cliff slayed the trout on nymphs right at their feet! Peeking caddis with plenty of green showing plus a size 14 black stone fly were both hot nymphs. No bugs though so I never wet a line (I did catch a couple of EBS crawling on the bridge railing…a sure sign of things to come).

I fished from 2 til 3:30PM. Found one nice trout rising to midges. Worked my way down a steep snowy bank (with my recuperating knee) to get into position…and he took my size 24 midge! A dandy 16″ male! It was tough getting back up through the knee deep drifts and over the plow bank, but it was well worth it.
I’ll give another look tomorrow…and every day it’s over 40 degrees.

Wonder if the big sycamore in the Junk Yard bend got taken out? It would take a lot to move it far. I’ll take a look tomorrow.

Thanks for the plug Rich, means a lot coming from you. Looks like a fishing window will open on Tuesday the 10th. I’ll be there looking for risers.

I plan to look for risers Wednesday afternoon (The air temp is supposed to reach 42). I have a chapter in Trout Boomer dedicated to fishing the Early Black Stonefly “hatch”.

The kill was never tracked to a definitive cause (we have our suspicions). The LJRA was formed in 1998 as a response to this event. The founders were determined that if there is ever a similar event we will at least be able to track the source.

If I said 1975, I was wrong. The “green rock worm” disappeared with the total bug kill of winter 1996-1997. Before that it was a very dependable hatch from late April thru sulfur time. In fact there were years when the only caddis dry I carried was a size 12 green Henryville with a groundhog hair wing. The bug is present in small numbers especially in the upper (up stream from Tyrone) river. But be careful what you wish for. This bug is a climax predator among macros and its presence in large numbers will be at the expense of other mayflies and caddis. Its absence (along with better water quality) may be why we have a much larger variety of bugs than we did before the kill. go to http://www.troutnut.com for a good picture of green rock worm.

While I agree that there should be more emphasis on fish habitat improvement and less on stocking hatchery fish, I will also defend the PFBC in their efforts to improve fishing and Public Fishing Access to our best trout waters. It was the PFBC that responded when LJRA pointed out the need for PFA on the “j”. They helped us find the first $100,000 of the $200,000 we have paid to “j” stream bank owners for PFA. PFBC also stepped forward when Sandy Run wetlands needed protection. And, I can not say enough about their habitat management group. They have worked closely with LJRA on most of our stream bank erosion remediation projects. remember that our PFB Commissioners are unpaid volunteers, just like those of us at LJRA…they deserve our support and our helpful criticism.
Come to our Feb. 11th meeting. Our PFB Commissioner, Lenny Lichvar will be their to answer your questions.

    Steelhd789,
Actually yesterday it got up to 43 degrees at 3:30pm. I got on the river at 2:30pm and fished until 4pm. When I approached the pool (through 20 inches of old snow), I could see a dozen or so rising fish! I could only see a few midges in the air and on the water, but I tied on a #16 black stone anyway. My not quite healed knee kept me on the bank making it difficult to reach the risers, most of which were close to the far bank. Long story short, I caught 2…hooked and broke off another and missed several takes. Great, albeit short, fun and a welcome relief from this long winter.
